Brand Management

Who wouldn’t want to create nine hundred wordmark files?

In 2013, I led the implementation of the Royal Ontario Museum’s new brand.

I inventoried all the materials which displayed the old wordmark, and surveyed staff who used them. I then figured out what would be needed to replace each item, and developed a budget and a production schedule.

Given the nine sub-brands which the Museum was launching simultaneously, the requirements for French and/or bilingual versions, and assorted formats and file types, we initially needed over nine hundred files*! I supervised two designers who were creating all the new wordmarks, and staff motivation was sometimes a challenge.

Needless to say, early in the process I developed a tracking chart and a consistent nomenclature system to keep everything straight.

I developed new brand guidelines, and organized training sessions on the use of the new brand. I approved internal and external usage of the brand.

*Fortunately for me, this number was later reduced.
